1. THC – Tetrahydrocannabinol
When you think of marijuana, this is the cannabinoid you’re likely most familiar with. Also known as Delta 9-THC, this is the best-known and most widely researched cannabinoid of all. That ‘high’ feeling you get when consuming marijuana is caused by THC.
That feeling comes from THC binding itself to the CB1 receptors in our brain. This results in the release of dopamine by the endocannabinoid system and that lead to feelings of euphoria. Although this is great for relaxing, it can also influence your concentration levels as well as your movement and sensory perception.

2. CBD – Cannabidiol
If you haven’t heard of THC, you’ve almost definitely heard of CBD. This cannabinoid has hit the mainstream and provides healing without the same psychoactive high that THC causes. Once a niche industry, now it’s a multi-billion dollar one.
The 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law and legalize industrial hemp growth in the U.S. This put CBD on the map. At the time of writing, CBD-derived hemp is legal in almost every state with the exception of South Dakota.

3. CBDV – Cannabidivarin
Cannabidivarin, or CBDV, is similar in structure to CBD. It was discovered in 1969 but there was little research on it until recently.

You’re likely to find more CBDV in strains that contain a lot of CBD. CBDV is great at reducing epileptic fits.
4. THCV – Tetrahydrocannabivarin
THCV is similar to THC but contains fewer carbon items. Although it has the potential to create a ‘high’ feeling, there’s so little of it that you likely won’t.
THCV is thought to be an agonist to some of THC’s effects which means that finding a strain with a lot of THCV will probably cause a clear-headed high that doesn’t last long but gives you a nice dose of energy.
5. CBG – Cannabigerol
Although most people haven’t heard of it, CBG is one of the most important cannabinoids. It’s the chemical parent of CBD and THC, which means that both of these cannabinoids wouldn’t exist without CBG.
It’s an essential cannabinoid, despite marijuana strains containing less than one percent of it. Although CBG is known to be a building block for other cannabinoids, it does contain therapeutic effects. It’s particularly helpful with Huntington’s Disease.
6. CBN – Cannabinol
When the THC of a cannabis plant degrades due to light or age, it creates CBN. When you consume CBN, you’ll feel a slight sedative effect which is ideal for anyone with insomnia.
Weed enthusiasts aren’t a big fan of finding CBN in their strain because it can be a sign of a stale herb. With that said, you should avoid throwing it away, especially if you’re looking to get a good night’s sleep.
7. CBC – Cannabichromene
Although CBD and THC are two of the more ample cannabinoids in marijuana, CBC comes in second place. There are a significant number of strains and it is the third most common cannabinoid!
It shares a similar molecular formula to THC and CBD but the atoms and chemical properties differ in all three compounds. CBC also works well if you combine it with other cannabinoids.

8. THCA – Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid
Last but not least is THCA. You’d think that this cannabinoid shares THC’s psychoactive properties but that’s not the case.
It’s only found in live and raw cannabis. THCA is the acidic form of THC and is only intoxicating when exposed to heat. Although it is an important cannabinoid, there is not much research on it.
